I have taught courses at a university for years. Always I have been one of the the most responsible teachers in student survey. Believe it or not, I am the only teacher who gives innovative tests. Indeed, Taiwanese teachers prefer to the traditional tests which require students to memorize. The problem is our students will cheat on the tests, if the test questions do not require students to think. For instance, some teachers ask students to memorize the articles. Rather than memorize the passages, students frequently take the copies on the exams. Teachers know the students will cheat, so they simply "open one eye and close the other." Year after year, students don't drill learning strategies, but they drill their cheating skill. It is easy for teachers to give a test by memorization. They don't need to think how to measure student proficiency. But for me, I want my students to feel my test is fair. I never ask my students to memorize the formula and I never give the test from the exercises. Students can open their books on my exams. I don't mind how many copied notes they will take, because these cheating behaviours are useless. My test is valid and reliable. The results indicate that students' scores are normally distributed from the range 90 to 30.
